RE: Quarter Final Game

October 2, 2005 at 3:00 pm
Feildian Grounds
Weather Conditions: Sunny, 16c & breezy 39 km/hr
with gusts to 41 km/hr

In a rematch of last year's playoff CBS took to the field in an effort to gain their first victory of the season..... in the first game of the year that really counted. The winner would move on into
the next playoff round.....the loser would go home. Both benches were stocked full of players, the weather was tremendous for October....though it was kinda breezy. The kick-off was delayed by about 20 minutes as we stood on the sidelines and watched Star of the Sea upset Mount Pearl in extra time. Would the soccer gods smile on CBS as well as Star? We would find out the answer to this question over the course of the next 90 minutes

The game started out "even steven" with Feildians making a little more headway into CBS territory. Feildians struck first at around 15 minutes when Matt Edwards corralled an errant ball, which eluded and bounced past Albert, from around 10 yards out & beat keeper Keith
Rideout who had no chance on the volley. For the next 20 minutes the difference between the teams was marginal with Feildians attacking a bit more and CBS defending admirably. Feildians made it 2-0 at the 40 minute mark on a scrambly play off a corner kick. Again the ball took several favourable Fieldian bounces before it found its way to the back of the net off the foot of somebody. CBS got that one back in the dieing seconds of the half when Albert Lush took a throw in at center threw the ball at Todd Ryan's back, the ball deflected back to Albert who beat two unsuspecting Feildian defenders, he then took advantage of some open space & carried the
ball into Feildians territory & struck a hard low drive from around 30 yards out. Keeper Neil Tetstone dropped down & made a nice save but he couldn't corral the rebound. Todd "speedy" Ryan was Johnny on the spot and squib kicked the ball behind Tetstone which got caught up in a wind gust and floated across the line to cut the margin to 2-1. Seconds later referee Damien "finally a good game" Masterson sounded the whistle to end the first half. CBS retreated to the bench with renewed enthusiasm .

The second half started with the same side which finished the first half, Dennis "Goggles" Dober, got an early jump on the kick off and was able to have all his soccer gear in place. Gerard said he
only wanted to play 5 minutes, Jeff replied that if he was only playing 5 minutes not to go out there he may only cause something. This proved to be foreshadowing at its finest.

It took Feildians just 4 minutes, of Gerard's planned 5 minutes, to regain their 2-goal advantage when Gerard "nut kracker" Kenny hauled down Feildians midfielder Jim Royle just outside the
18-yard box. Gerard tried the "nut kracker" which he made famous in St. Lawrence during the provincial tournament, but this time he only fondled the opponent. JR thought he was at the Sleeve and fell to the ground, screaming in disbelief as Gerard tumbled on top of him necessitated the ref to call a foul. He suggested they both get a room as this was a family rated game.

Mugs "Breezeway" Morgan promptly took the free kick for Feildians and placed a beautiful cross over the two man wall onto the head of Matt Edwards who deflected it into the corner of the net making it 3-1 for Feildians. CBS continued to press and fight for yardage, but alas our faith was sealed.

Fieldians players/spectators were permitted a run in the last five minutes, Lou "I'm not offside, it's my gut", Puddister and Nelson "Gout" Stokes took up vital positions on the field. Jeff explained to Nelson that he never played long enough to claim his soccer registration as a business expense this year.

Player of the Game has to go to Albert for his dizzying display of tackles and throw-ins.

Yellow Cards: Albert "I didn't say anything Ref" Lush

Notably moments: Albert asked if he will get a real uniform next season. Craig Baker never left in an ambulance. Gerard askedwho was available for next season.

On behalf of your sports writers, coaches, managers, beer runners, treasure, co-ordinator, ball carriers etc etc. (Gerard & Jeff) We wish everyone a great off season. Hopefully, next season will see us alltogether again.

Players who played: Gerard Kenny, Clyde Thornhill, Todd Ryan, Brian Gosse, Jeff Haines, Albert Lush, Dale Temple, Steve O'Driscoll, Claude Favre, Robert Taylor, Roger Power, Steve "Doc" Major, Craig Baker, Tony Baker, Ken Porter, Dennis "Goggles" Dober and Keith Rideout

Game 19 Game Report: CBS vs. Holy Cross

Game 19
The Night of the Yellow Cards

September 29, 2005 at 8:30pm
Wishingwell Field Weather Conditions: 7c with a light breeze

What would back to back games with Holy Cross bring? Could CBS improve on their performance from the previous game? The answers to these mind boggling questions lie within.

The game was played under excellent conditions, however the field left an awful lot to desire.....just like the refereeing. Once again Holy Cross started out utilizing their ball control style of play. CBS defended well and even generated some chances. A well thought out starting
line-up put Clyde "Too Tall" Thornhill in the defender's position, although that resulted in the team being a man short as we only started three in the midfield. Clyde played a great game and was near a complete game until a coaching strategy late in the match put him on the bench for an extra striker. Clyde lamented on the turn of events, but alass...... he was depending on Gerard "Big Toe" Kenny for a ride home. Gerard "Big Toe" stalked the back left outside and completed controlled Scrappy Mullett, Scrappy was forced to take several undisciplined challenges which resulted in free kicks for CBS. "Big Toe" taunted Scrappy at every turn. Things
were even till around the 30 minute mark when Scrappy removed Big Toe out of his jock (or was it his false teeth) and directed a nice cross into the net that first time keeper Albert Lush had no chance on. Gerard quickly took his big toe and left the playing surface quoting fatigue. Holy Cross went up by two when Paul Windsor re-directed another cross behind Lush, who once again had no chance to stop that one.

The half ended 2-0 in favour of Cross.

The second half was much the same with Cross playing ball control, CBS defending & also putting together a few counter attacks. Cross made it 3-0 when striker Todd "I forget his last name" beat Albert on a breakaway. After that the game turned into a joke with the referee
handing out yellow cards to CBS players for any reason he could dream up. Holy Cross players shouted and cursed the night away & the only players carded were the CBS players who Cross players pointed to. When will CBS learn not to speak too loudly to each other, the ref's keen ears are always alert to the whispers, his eyesight on the other hand makes Mr. Magoo seem like an eagle. The whistle sounded ending the fiasco with Cross going away with a 3-0 victory.

Ths game ended the regular season for CBS..... a season where this reporter must add that the CBS team stuck to their pre season plan of waiting till October & the playoffs before registering their first win. It has been noted that many professional teams could not stick that such a game plan with such discipline. Even the 1972 Soviet Hockey team could not have thought up such a plan to dupe Team Canada 72.

Congratulations to all involved in this remarkable achievement....now it's onto the playoffs where victory awaits.

Player of the match Clyde "Too Tall" Thornhill who played 89 mins and 20 seconds of flawless defending. Honourable note Gerard "Big Toe" Kenny whose ankles bruised up Scrappy's feet.

Yellow card recipients were: Roger Power, Robert Taylor, Brian Gosse & Tony Baker

Players who played: Gerard Kenny, Clyde Thornhill, Todd Ryan, Brian Gosse, Jeff Haines, Albert Lush, Dale Temple, Steve O'Driscoll, Claude Favre, Robert Taylor, Roger Power, Steve "Doc" Major, Craig Baker, Tony Baker & Ken Porter.

Game 18 Game Report: CBS vs. Holy Cross

Game 18
September 22, 2005 at 5:45pm
Mundy Pond Field
Weather Conditions: 14c with westerly winds 59 km/h gusting to 80

The game was played under windy conditions & the field which still hadn't dried out from the recent heavy rains, was like a bog. In the first half Holy Cross faced the wind & utilized their ball control style to perfection. They hit a couple of good strikes but could not beat keeper Craig Baker who replace former keeper Gerard 'the sieve" Kenny who was banished to the fullback line and told to keep his hands off the ball. Gerard however would figure into a scoring play. CBS also played their style to perfection. What that style is, I really don't know, but they kept Holy Cross off the score sheet & generated no real scoring chances. Referee German sounded the half time whistle and CBS were very happy to retreat to the bench at half time with the score deadlocked at 0-0.

In the second half with the wind to their back Holy Cross were a bit more dangerous but CBS still defended well......until about 10 minutes in when Gerard Kenny used his speed and endurance to save the ball on the touch line, this turn of events allowed Gerard time to turn the ball over to Fox Reddy, about 35 yards out. Reddy came in on a 3 on 2, slipped the ball through defender Tony Baker's legs and at the same time the last CBS defender back Denis Dober step on a gofer who was swimming past, fell to the boggy turf leaving two strikers unmarked & bang it was 1-0 for Holy Cross. CBS quickly regrouped and about 2 minutes later advanced the ball into Holy Cross territory. The ball ended up on Clyde Thornhill's foot just outside the 18 yard box. Clyde threaded a beautiful pass right to Claude "Le Chat" Favre & before he could shout out "YES....YES" the ball was in the net & the score was knotted at 1 goal apiece. Jubilation reigned supreme and the shouts of joy could be heard as far away as the Esso station in Manuels where the cars were backed up to the bridge. When everyone on the field regained consciousness, the game resumed and Holy Cross did not want to settle for a tie. They kept pressing, CBS kept
defending and about 5 minutes later Darryl Winsor penetrated from the outside, got in close & scored a very nice marker that put Cross up 2-1. CBS did not quit & pressed the play for the final 5 minutes but could not equalize. The whistle sounded, both teams shook hands and Holy Cross went home with the 2-1 win & CBS retreated for a cold Molson product and a lively post game discussion of the well played match.

Highlights of the match included: a) scoring a goal b) Denis Dober playing a complete game c) Albert Lush leaving without consuming a beer d) Kenny Porter playing his played is first game as a forty-two-year old d) none of the above e) all of the above.

Players who played: Gerard Kenny, Clyde Thornhill, Denis Dober, Todd Ryan, Keith Garland, Brian Gosse, Jeff Haines, Albert Lush, Dale Temple, Steve O'Driscoll, Claude Favre, Robert Taylor, Roger "Stiffy" Power, Steve "Doc" Major, Craig Baker, Tony Baker & Ken Porter.

Game 17 Game Report: Molson/Duke versus CBS

Game 17
September 21, 2005 at 8:30pm
Nugent Field
Weather Conditions: 12c with SE winds 26km

Under wet & windy conditions CBS hosted Molson at Nugent Field. Both
teams fielded 11 players with no substitutes on the bench. However both
dressing rooms had several dozen Molson products. Last night saw two new
firsts for our team. We drank all our post game beer and Gerard Kenny made
his debut as goalkeeper. The big question pondered by everyone at the
beginning of the match was, could he stop a shot? Well the answer to that
question for the first half was NO. Five shots.....five goals. The first one
came early on a cross the big English lad finished with a nice header to the
top corner. Kenny had no chance on that one as he couldn't run backward and
jump at the same time. Five minutes later the small saucy Irishman beat him
on a free kick, who thought we needed a wall. Before the half ended 3 more
markers, it looked like two of them were on off side plays. Once again there
were no linesmen.

The second half was pretty well "even steven". Kenny did make a
couple of stops. They were actually pretty good ones and came back to back.
He stopped a shot from about 12 yards out, the rebound was corralled by a
Molson player who volleyed from 14 yards & Kenny got his hand out to deflect
it wide. In the post match banter in the dressing room, Gerard said, "This
is easy when you play like a fullback". Both teams stood in amazement at the
unexpected feat. Gerard's first and only attempt at a drop kick came in the
second half, he ran nimbly to the 18 within the required 6 seconds, laid the
ball out and drilled it ten yards across the top of the 18 to a bewildered
Molson's forward. Once again the players on both teams stood in amazement.
The final marker of the contest came with 5 minutes left when Dale Temple
inadvertently headed the ball into his own net. In Dale's defence it was a
beautiful header into the corner of the net. CBS had a glorious chance to
break the shutout late in the game when Clyde Thornhill took a cross just
outside the 18 yard area & nimbly got around two defenders, but he couldn't
beat the sliding keeper....the ball deflected over to Todd Ryan whose volley
was cleared off the goal line by a Molson defender then the ball sailed over
to Claude "Da Chat" who yelled "Yes, Yes", but oh no he could not grab it.
Da Chat turned, spun and turned again only to be called for delay of game.
Close....but no cigar. The whistle sounded ending one of the most memorable
matches in the brief history of the CBS Masters. Final score 6-0 for Molson.

Players who played: Gerard Kenny, Clyde Thornhill, Denis Dober, Todd
Ryan, Keith Garland, Brian Gosse, Jeff Haines, Albert Lush, Dale Temple,
Steve O'Driscoll, Claude Favre, Robert Taylor

FW: CBS Masters Provincial Tournament

Due to time constraints this is the Readers Digest Version.

Tournament Photos - CLICK HERE!

Game 1: 10:30 am Saturday versus Mount Pearl at Municipal Pitch, St. Lawrence.

Final Score: CBS 1 Mount Pearl 1

Boy what a difference one game makes. The last time we played Mount Pearl, CBS had 14 players & Mount Pearl 20. On this morning CBS bolstered by the 6 additions from Fortune & the return of Smokie had 19 players to Mount Pearl's 18. Mount Pearl came out crashing & banging as normal & import keeper Carey Rose shook off the early jitters & kept the score sheet clean & the first half ended scoreless. CBS put together a few offensive outbursts in the 2nd half. Import striker Dickie Foote had a couple of good runs & Craig Baker who was moved up to the forward line also had a couple cracks. However with 10 minutes remaining Dickie received an
outside pass at around 35 yards came in one on one on the right fullback & turned him inside out and scored on a nice shot from just inside the 18 yard area. However victory was not in the cards, as linesman Jim Loder made a very poor call with 5 minutes remaining giving Mount Pearl a gift penalty shot, for what, no one really knows and Mount Pearl midfielder

Gerry O'Brien evened the score. CBS deserved a better fate and the final whistle signalling a 1-1 draw.

Game 2: 3:00 pm Saturday versus Lawn at Laurentian Grounds, St. Lawrence.
Final Score: Lawn 2 CBS 0

This one was closer than the score indicates. Lawn controlled the first half & dominated at times, but they could not beat keeper Carey Rose who was more than steady in the nets. The first half ended scoreless. CBS played a better second half but couldn't muster any real offence. With
just under 10 minutes remaining, a frantic scrambled ensued inside the CBS 6 yard box and just before a Lawn player was about to kick the ball in the net, import defender Wayne Collins dropped down to try to block the ball & was called by the linesman for handling the ball. On the ensuing penalty Bill Warren scored for Lawn & they were up 1-0. Just over a minute later
the result was sealed when Sam Warren scored on a nice shot from 12 yards out that froze keeper Carey Rose.

Game 3: 6:00 pm Saturday versus Paradise at Laurentian Grounds, St. Lawrence
Paradise3 2; CBS 0

The final game was the battle for bragging rights on the shore. In a game that saw both teams going at half speed, Paradise scored once in both halves to come away with a 2-0 win. Ernie Sharpe & Phil Walsh scored for Paradise. Gary Clancey made a few stops to earn the shutout.

St. Lawrence won the title by blanking Lawn 3-0 in the championship match.

Players who donned the blue jerseys included: Gerard Kenny, Clyde Thornhill, Denis Dober, Todd Ryan, Terry Fleming, Brian Gosse, Jeff Haines, Tony Baker, Craig Baker, Dale Temple, Claude Favre, Shawn Paul, Steve "Smokie" O'Driscoll, Carey Rose, Walter "Dickie" Foote, Peter Boland, Dave Holloway, Wayne Collins, Ed Hillier and Freeman "Shiny" Hillier.

All in all it was a great weekend & a few laughs. Thanks go out to the imports from Fortune who played their hearts out & improved the CBS team immensely.

Game 16: Mount Pearl 2 CBS 0

Game 16
September 5, 2005 at 8:30pm
Wishingwell Pitch
Weather Conditions: 15c with light winds

Match 16 saw another first timer try to stimulate the CBS offence in the name of Albert Lush. Albert gave a great effort but the scoreless streak continued. Even Pierre & Roger Power couldn't bring ascoring touch.

Gerard brought the team together for a pre game chat & brought out the 4-5-1 formation or was that the 1-5-4 formation with John "Rugby" Saunders prowling in the lone striker position. But nothing would work. Mount Pearl once again fielded a team comprising of around 20 players to CBS's 14. They opened the scoring early, about 10 minutes in, when a cross from the corner was handled by a Mount Pearl player inside the 18 and much to the chagrin of the CBS squad was not noticed by the bakeapple picker & was volleyed into the net before one could cry "
Bakeapple Jam". Mount Pearl kept pressing but could not finish. CBS's best chance of the half came when Gerard Kenny crossed the ball right through the box, about one foot from the goal line, however no one was there to tap it in. The half ended 1-Nil.

Mount Pearl netted their second marker early in the second half off a corner kick. The game became rougher after that with both sides taking liberties with each other. Pierre Gauvreau was sent to the sidelines with about 25 minutes remaining after he was on the receiving end of a vicious tackle. The whistle sounded not soon enough and another shutout loss was in the books. Final score 2-Nil..

Players who played: Keith Rideout, Gerard Kenny, Clyde Thornhill, Denis Dober, Todd Ryan, Terry Fleming, Brian Gosse, Jeff Haines, Tony Baker, Albert Lush, Dale Temple, Pierre Gauvreau, Roger Power & John Saunders

Game 15: Feildians 4 CBS 0

Game 15: Feildians 4 CBS 0
August 29, 2005 at 6:00pm
Nugent Field
Weather Conditions: 14c with light winds

After the recent rains the grass on Nugent Field returned to life, but the real question was, could CBS return to any resemblence of life. Forget about suspense....the answer was NO. CBS once again went with the 3-5-2 formation, but with less success than the last match. Newly
uniformed Bernie Hicks had the first try of the game with less than 5 minutes played, a nice feed from Todd Ryan sent Bernie into the area, but the Feildians keeper made a strong challenge to cover the ball. Bernie lamented that he could have scored, but thought that sending the ball and keeper into the goal would not have been very sporting. Feildians struck first at around 15 minutes on a corner kick when one of their lumberjack type strikers was left unmarked in the 6 yard area & he tapped home a "gimme" behind a startled Keith Rideout. Feildians kept pouring it on as they constantly outmanned CBS in their side of the field & had the three fullbacks constantly scrambling and on their heals. Towards the end of the half CBS started to pick it up, but could not generate any offense. Their was glimmer of hope midway through the half when a ball was put through to Todd Ryan who got his toe on it only to see the shot roll wide by two feet. Brian Gosse also made a quite nifty play where he brought the ball
up from his fullback position & dribbled by a multitude of Feildian defenders, penetrated to the top of the 18, only to be denied by the Feildians keeper. The half time whistle sounded with Feildians holding a 1-Nil lead.

There would be no comeback this night at Nugent Feild. Feildians scored three quick ones early in the second half & CBS were toast. Some more offensive chances were generated later in the half. Sean Paul took over the duties of corner kicks and the ball actually came into play in the penalty area, the CBS lads were flat footed on the ball as they were not accustomed to seeing the ball come over from the corner. Captain Cal had a nice shot from a free kick actually get around the wall only to be stopped by the Feildians keeper who had line up for the shot perfectly.

Keith "Cable Guy" Hynes hit a nice hard volley from out on an angle from 12 yards out only to miss the net by less than a foot. Frankie Dwyer also had a nice chance from within the 18 but missed the net. However the highlight of the night came midway through the second half when Gerard Kenny attempted to crack off one of the lumberjack forwards only to bounce off and tumble to the tuff hitting his forehead off the lucious playing field. When he regained consciousness, he acknowleged the four fingers that Jeff showed him and he retired to the sideline to await the full time whistle. Gerard tried to get the mud over his face, but he wouldn't let Jeff spit on a tissue and rub it the way his mother used to do it.

On a final note last night's game was the final game for Rick Squires. Rick has been called up to the Ottawa Renegades, he explained that football jerseys fit better. Final Score Feildians 4 CBS 0

Players who played: Keith Rideout, Gerard Kenny, Rick Squires, Mark Penney, Cal Dwyer, Shawn Paul, Clyde Thornhill, Denis Dober, Keith Hynes,Todd Ryan, Bernie Hicks, Frank Dwyer, Terry Fleming, Brian Gosse

Game 14: Star 2 CBS 0

August 22, 2005 at 6:30pm

Mundy Pond Field
Weather Conditions: 19c with WSW winds 24 gusting to 37

Have the Soccer Gods turned their back on the CBS masters?? The scoring draught continued into game 14. Captain Cal brought the troops together for a pre-game pep talk/strategy session. This game saw the return of Johnny "Rugby" Saunders and Keith "The Cable Guy" Hynes and we started the game with 4 reserves on the bench. Things were looking good. CBS took the wind in the first half & full of piss & vinegar..... & five midfielders, completely controlled the 1st half from whistle to whistle. Their hard work led to a couple of nice changes but once again the finishing touch was not there. Brian Gosse had the best chance on a shot from about 12 yards out. It came off a nice corner kick by Jeff Haines. Jeff got his corner into the 6 yard box & the ball came out nicely to Brian who shot through a maze of short guys only to miss the mark by a couple of feet. We continued throughout the half with nice ball movement but the half time
whistle sounded with the scoreboard reading NIL-NIL.

Right from the second half kick off, Star brought the ball up through the middle & sprung Tony Wells into an open space & his hard volley from 16 yards beat keeper Keith Rideout, who had no chance to keep that one out. Star with the wind to their backs kept the pressure on, but could not add to their lead. The chances for CBS were few & far between the rest of the way, although Shawn Paul happened to make it near the 6 yard box only to feel the "wrath" of the Star keeper. The game turned chippy towards the end with Tony Price kicking Gerard "Glad my jock didn't fall off" Kenny in the "groinial area". Price received a yellow card for his effort while
Gerard got at least 3 days of celibacy. Brian Gosse tried to even things up a few minutes later when he unceremoniously dumped Price, but the referee pointed to the spot & Star made it 2-NIL when they converted on the resulting penalty kick. Ten seconds later the final whistle blew & we retreated to the sidelines for some cold Molson & some post match analysis. One other incident of note was when Neff Dwyer was sent off by the ref with about 10 minutes remaining for adamantly advising the ref that he thought that his parents were never married and that he may be some kind of "illegitimate focker". Neff gets to sit out the next match as an additional reward for those insightful comments. Thanks once again to Molson Breweries for the cold ones and to Keith Rideout for tending the net.

Players who played: Keith Rideout, Gerard Kenny, Rick Squires, Mark Penney, Cal Dwyer, Jeff Haines, Shawn Paul, Shawn Tilley, Neff Dwyer, Steve Major, Clyde Thornhill, John Saunders, Denis Dober, Keith Hynes, Todd Ryan

Game 13: Molson 2 CBS 0

August 15, 2005 at 6:30pm
Nugent Field - Kelligrews
Weather Conditions: 15c with light winds

Game 13 saw the CBS goal scoring draught run to three consecutive games. The lush green grass of early summer has given way to the brown lifeless hay of August. The dog days have taken a big bite out of our team. A constant struggle to field a team has taken a toll, the "what ifs" and "the too bads" linger like a bad hangover, but a nice cold beer soon remedied the anguish. Last night saw the return of "Le Gros" Pierre Gauvreau who missed the first 12 matches, his return brought back memories of grander games. From the kickoff CBS controlled the first ten minutes. Molson were in disarray as they started the match with only 11 men. However things turned in their favour at the 15 minute mark when CBS defenders played the offside trap which did not work, as we were once again without linesmen, and a Molson attacker slipped through and scored on a breakaway. Ten minutes later they banged in another. An uninspired CBS team played like the brown worn field looked....... tired....... and the half time whistle sounded with Molson up 2-0.

Captain Cal rallied the troops at the half and came up with a change of strategy.......a 2-5-3 formation....moving one fullback up to the midfield line. The strategy working immediately and CBS took control of the second half and held the majority of the play the rest of the way. The hances were there.....the finishing wasn't. The terrible sound of the final whistle brought an end to a promising second half. Gerard quickly collected the beer from his car, the players eyes widen with delight as the spectacle of glimmering ice shone through on a warm, dry August night. The rays from the setting sun cast shadows on our faces as the first drops of heavenly nectar splashed against our parched throats. Our spirits were again renewed and chatter of how we will approach our next match arose from the dust. Thoughts of " Will we ever score again?" lingered only to be replaced by the eternal excitement of, "boys, we'll get 'em next time."
Yes.....think positive.......as Gerard always says "This is the exhibition season....let's win the game that counts.... in September". We still have the rest of August figure out how to get that ever elusive goal. Thanks to Molson Breweries, Mark Hatfield and Dale Temple for coming out & giving us fresh legs and to Keith Rideout for tending the net.

Players who played: Keith Rideout, Gerard Kenny, Ernie Bolt, Rick Squires, Terry Fleming, Pierre Gauvreau, Cal Dwyer, Jeff Haines, Mark Hatfield, Bernie Hicks, Shawn Paul, Shawn Tilley, Dale Temple, Ken Porter, Jeff Dwyer, Steve Major, Frank Dwyer

Game 12: Mount Pearl 3 CBS 0

August 10,2005 at 8:30pm

Wishingwell Field
Weather Conditions: 19c with south westerly winds 18km/h gusting to 39 km/hr
(Photo at right "Stretchin' to the Oldies")

Mount Pearl took to the field with a squad numbering 18 strong in pale comparison to CBS's squad of 14, including newcomer Bernie Hicks. Mount Pearl with the strong westerly wind to their backs came out strong & pressed throughout the full 1st half. Most of their chances were from outside the 18 yard box & the few in close chances were handled by Claude (Le Chat), including a nice diving save and thwarting Patty Brake on a breakaway. CBS had a couple of dandy chances with Steve Major's break-a-way. During the same play Steve was pining the keeper and tripping a defender, Neffi Dwyer collected the errant ball and launch a blast from the 6 yard line that NASA scientists are still tracking via satellite. (Update: the ball is expected to land at the Space Center in Florida this afternoon). Neff explained that although he missed we were awarded a corner kick on the play and as Uncle Cal would say, "another scoring opportunity". The first half ended in a Nil-Nil deadlock and morale was high on the bench as we prepared to go back out for the 2nd half & play with the wind in our sails. Team CBS had completed a classic text book example of defending.

The second half started with the referee's whistle. CBS gathered it's forces and marched into position, only to discovered we were short a full back. Jeff Haines took up the left outside defenders position as he was credited with the error. Play resumed and expectations swirled high in the windy August night, starting to sound a bit like Sleepy Hollow again. No one could
have predicted the series of unfortunate events which would unravel before us. CBS was still defensive minded but was slowly shaking off our rope-a-dope tactics. Then with 52 minutes gone, a seemingly harmless lob ball to the keeper turned our fortunes. Le Chat roared "YES YES", but Dennis thought he heard "NO NO" and headed the waist high ball over Le Chat's shoulder and into the corner of the net, 1 - 0 Mount Pearl Waterworks. Waterworks flowed more easy after the score which was recorded own goal, but to Denis' credited we did score it.

Waterworks continued the pressure and was rewarded 15 minutes later with a strike off the boot of Billy Reid to up the score 2 - 0. CBS finally came out off its defensive shell and pressed hard to get on the board. We were finally rewarded, Dr. Steve collected the ball in a wide open space inside the six and stroked our come back goal, but wait the scream which came from the goal line could not be mistaken. Ken Porter came out of no where, arms fraying and fists pumping and the ball ricocheted of his chest and cleared the goal post, no goal. Lady luck had once again turned a blind eye to us, (Gerard said Roz always looks at him that way). Denis Dober almost made up for his earlier "own goal" when he hit a beautiful volley from 38 yards that just sailed over the bar by a whisker. The final Mount Pearl marker came in the dieing moments of the match when Pat Brake was awarded a penalty kick after Gerard "Handball Kenny" was called inside the CBS penalty area. Claude "Le Chat" stopped the initial shot from Brake, but could not hold the rebound and nobody went to help clear the rebound. Gerard explained to Claude not to worry, nobody came to help him last game either. The whistle blew shortly later and CBS retreated to the dressing room dreaming of better fortunes to come.

All the same, it was a good game and the dressing room was alive with chatter, insults and good laughs. Again the field attendant had to ask us to close her down and kicked the stragglers out of the dressing room at 11:30pm, so it was not all bad.

Man of the Match went to the Doctor who ran miles while covering off both a striker position & a midfielder position at the same time. Kudos also should go to Bernie Hicks who played admirably in his first organized footballmatch of both this & last century.

To sum it up we ran out of legs in the second half & were beaten by a bigger bench.

Players who played included: Claude Fauvre, Gerard Kenny, Denis Dober, Steve Major, Jeff Haines, Shawn Tilley, Ken Porter, Todd Ryan, Shawn Paul, NeffiDwyer, Bernie Hicks, Craig Baker, Rick Squires.

Yellow cards: Brian Gosse

Next Match: Monday, August 15. CBS hosts Molsons at S. Nugent Field. Kickoff is at 6:30.

Previous result: Molson took advantage of a man advantage and poured in something like 7 goals. Kenny Porter spolied the shut out for the chumps. Lets come out with a full squad this time and play them smart. They like to shoot but there's usually room in the offensive corners.

Game 11: Holy Cross 4 CBS 0

August 8,2005 at 8:30pm
Wishingwell Field
Weather Conditions: 19c with a light breeze

Game 11 marked the beginning of the second half of the season. Things started well as Captain Cal decided to move Brian Gosse up from fullback to center midfield to start the game. CBS controlled the first 10 minutes or so with Brian right in the middle of things. "The Mayor", Shawn Tilley made his first start of the season after spending the first half of the season touring the brothels of Amsterdam & watching the Bundesliga. The tide turned in the favour of Holy Cross when Paul Winsor scored at the 30 minute. We held our own and even had a couple of good chances but couldn't finish. The half time whistlewas sounded by ex Crusader "German" with the score 1-0 for Cross.

We were still in this one....so we thought. Holy Cross came out in the second half & scored two more markers by the 60th minute. The second one was as a result of a misjudgement by fullback Gerard "Help Me" Kenny who allowed a volley by the Cross goalkeeper to bounce over his head allowing the Cross striker to advance from midfield with Clyde "one contact lens" Thornhill clipping at his heals to no avail and score on a 40 yard breakaway. It was all
over....but for the crying. Darryl Whelan added insult to injury by scoring late in the game on a free kick from 25 yards which he kicked beyond a disorganized wall & into the center of the net.

On a plus side it was noted that strikers Steve Major and Todd Ryan ran all night & harassed the Holy Cross fullbacks, Brian Gosse played very well in the midfield, Mark Penney looks like a nice addition and it was great to have "TheMayor" back in the fold.

Roger "sore neck" Power handled the stop watch and sideline interviews while Rick "bad ankle" Squires sat in amazement as the spectacle unravelled beforehis eyes.

It was a kinda chippy match but we escaped with just a few bumps a bruises, nothing the nice iced down Molson products couldn't fix.

Our next match is tomorrow night once again at Wishingwell Field at 8:30 versus our arch rivals Mount Pearl.

Some video from the match is shown below. Check it out.

CBS Draws With Fieldians 1-1

For those who couldn't make it last night, we picked up our second point of the year and probably deserved a win once again. But we'll take it. Our goal came on a crossed ball ( or a missed shot by Cal depending on how you look at it- sorry Cal !) and Keith Storey of the Fieldians knocked a nice
header into the top corner. We couldn't have done it any better, or at all by ourselves. Everybody gave it a 110% and picked it up in the second half which is more impressive since we didn't have any substitutes. I believe we only had 2 cards, one for Cal and one for Ernie "WWF" Bolt. I believe
we found our enforcer! It was a job well done and the "free" beer after the game was an added bonus. Sorry Gerard!!

CBS Falls to Holy Cross 3-1

At King George V field, CBS encountered a disciplined Holy Cross squad that used their passing game to good effect. Scoring once in the first half and twice in the second, Cross dominated ball possession. For CBS, Keith played another good net game. Guest player Ralf had a couple of dangerousstrikes from 25 yards.

Star 1; CBS 0

In a close match, Star had luck on their side and came out with a 1 nil win over a hardworking CBS squad.  The first half ended with a 0-0 tie .  Star scored at the 75th minute on an own goal when a hard clearing shot rebounded into the CBS net.  Like the sportsmen they are, the Star players applauded the lucky goal long and hard.  Late in the match, CBS had two good chances to equalize but a strong headwind thwarted the efforts.

Player of the Match for CBS was Roger Power because he is writing this up.  No, its Keith Rideout who kept an excellent match in difficult conditions.

RE: CBS Masters Game 6: Mount Pearl 1 CBS 0

There has been a change in location for tonight's (Monday July 25) game. It is now at Wishingwell at 6:45.

Wednesday's game is for 6:30 at King George V. Let me know if this causes any problems as our numbers are low. It does appear that we will have at least 2 subs for tonight. The League does say they will have a schedule for the month of August by July 31. I'll believe it when I see it.

Clyde, have you been in contact with John C.?

Will Baker # 2 be back??????? How cold was the beer????? I s Frank Moores really dead????? Can someone answer these questions.

Also, someone has to get on phone & find out where all our players went.

Cheers....& good luck versus Mount Pearl

RE: CBS Masters Game 6: Mount Pearl 1 CBS 0

July 14, 2005 at 6:45 pm
Mount Pearl Soccer Field
Weather Conditions: 24c with a light breeze

Game 6 featured a rare Thursday night match which could be best described as a walk through Sleepy Hollow compared to our last match. The early morning hours of game day included e-mails and telephone calls to try and raise the required 11 players. But at game time Captain Cal came through and brought along a sneaker clad buddy named Julius Daxner, I believe he
is related to Dragon. Julius proved to be a nice addition to the squad and we have our agent, Cal, trying to sign him for the remainder of the season, (This may be difficult has Julius doesn't need his stamps). Cal said he was better than him, but not quite as good as Cal thinks he is, this proved to be true. After much scrambling for a keeper for the match, Brian Gosse lured injured back fielder Keith Rideout out to tend goal. Keith did an excellent job stopping 53 of 54 shots, the one he missed could be best described as drooling over the line by a couple of inches.

The match was even after 45 minutes, but we could feel the tide start to shift in Mount Pearl's favour, both Cal and Roger Power left at the half, Cal said he should not have to come off the field for the remainder of the season. He has taken his turn. With Mount Pearl Waterworks flowing easily and steadily down hill their relentless water pressure paid off at the 70 minute mark when Pat Brake's half missed header slipped and squished its way over our line.

CBS did managed to gain yardage in Mount Pearl's half, but were water cannoned back every time by John Clarke. The match did turn ugly or friendly depending where you sit on the same sex marriage issue as newly acquired player, Julius, was fondled or manhandled during an attack on Mount Pearl net. The Mount Pearl Mid-fielder explained to Julius that he was not
afraid of him and welcomed the attention and rough play. That comment sort off left the CBS forwards wondering if they should approach the Mount Pearl net?

All in all it was a well played and officiated match, several off sides were call against our opponents which was a first for this season andnobody was called a bayman.

Man of The Match: This has to go to our backline and keeper all the lads back there played their hearts out.

Players who played:
Jeff Haines, Clyde Thornhill, Rick Squires, Roger Power, Todd Ryan, Brian Gosse, Terry Fleming , Ernie Bolt, Steve Major, Frank Dwyer, Cal Dwyer, Julius Daxner, Keith Rideout, Kenny Porter, Denis Dober
Yellow cards: None for CBS

RE: CBS Masters Game 5: Feildians 2 CBS 1

July 11, 2005 at 6:45 pm
King George V Field
Weather Conditions: 17c

Game 5 proved to be our most challenging game of this early season, with only three subs to start the game, we ran into bad luck as Craig Baker came up lame 10 minutes in. Feildians struck first as Tony Baker was adjusting equipment on the sideline, a long hard knuckle ball hand cuffed Claude as a rebound landed directly on the head of the Feildians striker. CBS regrouped and came back strong several minutes later Todd Ryan and Shawn Paul were brought down hard in the penalty area by the Feildians keeper, who would have hit more players had they been in the area of the eighteen. Cal Dwyer was called on to take the penalty kick, but as he wasn't at the game a discussion arose as to who would attempt the shot. Brian Gosse answered the challenge and buried a beautiful strike to knot the game at 1.

The half continued on with some very strong tackling and several yellow cards were flashed by referee, Helder Bailot. Feildians took the lead with a minute left in the half. Jeff Haines was on the turf searching for air and asking God to save the family jewels. Tony Marks of Feildians grabbed the errant ball which came ringing of Jeff, I meaning ringing, the referee ordered Jeff to remain down as he witness the bells tolling. Several calls were made to play the ball off the field, but the big Feildian's striker ceased the opportunity to play all by himself, as players were stopped, and deposit the ball into the top corner out of reach of our keeper.

The second half continued with hard tackles, name calling, (somebody called Roger a bayman) which hurt the baymen's feelings. Jeff Dwyer was left all alone inside the 18 twice late in the half, but failed to dent the twine. Both Jeff's agreed in the dressing room after the match that if theycould score we wouldn't lose a match.

The dressing room was noticeably quite without our orangatang man, but everyone admitted the game brought us back the early days of townie vs baymen and kicking the soccer ball only happened when you missed youropponent.

Man of the Match for CBS, Denis Dober. Denis played a complete game had several good hits on Nelson Stokes. Denis was quoted, " This was myfirst complete game since 1972".

Next match Thursday July 14, 2005 @ Mount Pearl @ 6:45.

Players who played:
Craig Baker, Jeff Haines, Clyde Thornhill, Rick Squires, Roger Power,
Todd Ryan, Jeff Dwyer, Tony Baker, Shawn Paul, Steve O'Driscoll, Brian
Gosse, Terry Fleming , Claude Favre, Steve Major, Denis Dober
Yellow cards: Jeff Dwyer and Tony Baker

CBS Masters Game 4: Mount Pearl 1 CBS 1

2005 CBS Squad @ King George V

July 4, 2005 at 8:30 pm
King George V Field
Weather Conditions: 13c with a light breeze

Game 4 featured a few firsts for the season. Three new players Claude (la chat) Favre in the net, Frank Dwyer up front, who brings his own style of orangatang soccer to the field and in the midfield Dr. Steve Major MD, who may be more valuable off the field as our Chief Medical Officer. The game also resulted in our first point of the season.

The "Torbay Unit" started the match, led by Geoff Lowe, Roger Power, Todd Ryan and Rick Squires. Mount Pearl came out crashing & banging but we defended well. Midway through the half the "CBS Contingent" took over with Frank Dwyer showing his speed & talent up front in extremely brief bursts. Chances were about "even steven" during the first half. Claude showed some fine ball handling skills in the nets and the whistle blew at halftime witha 0-0 deadlock.

The second half was much the same as the first. We defended well and kept Mount Pearl's chances to low percentage outside shots. We penetrated a couple of times but couldn't finish. Mount Pearl struck first at 75 minutes on a quick counter attack that caught us off guard and Bill Bavis notched the marker on a nice finish. Claude had no chance on his volley from eight yards out. We replied within two minutes when Craig Baker got the ball up to the 8 yard line for a throw in. On a throw in from Roger Power, Captain Cal made a nice feed to Keith Hynes who finished it off from well within the 18 yard box. [POST GAME INTERVIEW WITH CAL - CLICK HERE]

We had a great chance to win it only a couple of minutes later when Jeff Haines was sent in all alone only to see his strike roll tantalizingly wide of the net. A few minutes later the whistle went & after our team picture was taken we retreated to the dressing room to savour our first point of the young season. For those historians among us we managed to earn our first point last year on August 25th so we are seven weeks ahead of last season.

Standouts last night included the Baker boys & Brian Gosse & generally the whole back line, Smokey in the midfield, Claude in the net and Shawn Paul upfront, especially for surviving a couple of cracks from John Clarke.

Players who played:
Craig Baker, Jeff Haines, Gerard Kenny, Clyde Thornhill, Geoff Lowe, Rick Squires,
Roger Power, Todd Ryan, Jeff Dwyer, Tony Baker, Shawn Paul, Steve O'Driscoll, Brian Gosse, Keith Hynes, Terry Fleming , Ernie Bolt, Claude Favre, Steve Major, Frank Dwyer, Cal Dwyer
Yellow cards: None for CBS

CBS Masters Game 3: Molson/Duke 4 CBS 1

June 27, 2005
Nugent Field CBS
Weather Conditions: Sunny & 17c

Game 3 featured a similar slow start as in Game 2 and it was 2-0 for Duke before we knew it, with both goals being scored in the first 20 minutes or so. Roger Power, the pride of Torbay, brought us back to within one with a nice marker at the 41 minute mark with a nice setup from Jeff (neff) Dwyer.

Duke added a third midway through the second half on a penalty kick and a fourth later on in the half. Neff Dwyer had one called back due to an errant off side call with 15 minutes left. He chested down a beautiful volley from Craig Baker just inside the 18 yard box and buried it into the corner of thenet, only to be denied by the referee's whistle.

The only consolation from this match was that it was played in ideal conditions on Nugent Field in Kelligrews on a playing surface that actually consisted of grass. We also welcomed two new players last night, Terry Fleming and Ernie Bolt, so we are now pretty well maxed out for players right now, with the possibility of one more addition in Frank Dwyer when hereturns from vacation next week.

Players who played:
Craig Baker, Jeff Haines, Gerard Kenny, Clyde Thornhill, Geoff Lowe,
Rick Squires, Roger Power, Ken Porter, Todd Ryan, Jeff Dwyer, Tony Baker,
Robert Taylor, Shawn Paul, Steve O'Driscoll, Brian Gosse, Denis Dober,
Keith Hynes, Terry Fleming and Ernie Bolt.
Yellow cards: None

On the out of town scoreboard: Holy Cross 6 Labatt Star 1; Feildians 3 Mount Pearl 1

CBS Masters Game 2: Labatts Star 2 CBS 1

June 20, 2005 at Wishingwell Field
Weather: 14c, Winds WSW 30 gusting to 42

CBS fought diligently but could not come up with the equalizer in a 2-1 loss to Labatt's Star in a match played in windy conditions at the Wishingwell Bog. CBS had the wind in the first half but it was Star who came out flying with 2 quick markers in the first 20 minutes. Craig Baker subbing for ailing keeper Keith Garland (flu) could not be faulted for either of the goals. Captain Cal got the lone marker for CBS 40 minutes in on a 45 yarder that was aided by the prevailing westerlies. The Star keeper was caught off his line and the ball sailed over his head & into the net. CBS came out stronger against the wind in the second half and gradually took the play to Star. With 17 minutes to play, Todd Ryan was sent in all alone and was hauled down inside the 18 yard box. The subsequent penalty kick was taken by Brian Gosse who was thwarted by the Star Keeper. All in all it was a good effort by the boys from the shore who deserved a better result. Player of the Match was Captain Cal with a definite honourable mention to Craig Baker who was morethan steady in the net.

Players who played:
Craig Baker, Jeff Haines, Gerard Kenny, Clyde Thornhill, Cal Dwyer,
Geoff Lowe, Rick Squires, Roger Power, Ken Porter, Todd Ryan, Jeff Dwyer,
Tony Baker, Robert Taylor, Shawn Paul, Steve O'Driscoll, Brian Gosse
Yellow cards: None

On the out of town scoreboard: Molson/Duke 6 Feildian 3 and Mt. Pearl 1 Holy Cross 1

Two games are on tap next week as CBS hosts Molson Duke of Duckworth at Nugent Field in Kelligrews on Monday June 27 at 6:45 pm, while on Wednesday June 29 they host Holy Cross at Nugent Field also at 6:45pm. Tickets areavailable at the Mile One Box Office.

CBS Battles Feildians in Season Opener

June 15, 2005 at Feildian Grounds
Weather: 6c with a light drizzle

Feildians 3 CBS 0

For those that couldn't make it ...here's the Readers Digest version.

We started with 11 players. Captain Cal came to coach but seeing that there was no bench to manage he pull on his shorts & made it 12. Smokey & Keith Hynes quickly showed up & we had 3 on the bench. It was even steven for the 1st 30 minutes or so. We had a good chance when Todd Ryan was sent in all alone but someone (was it the goalie??) nudged it just wide of the goal.

Feildians went up 1-0 fairly late in the 1st half. I didn't see the goal as I was filling in the game sheet, although Jeff Haines (playing full back admitted blame for that one).

So it was 1-0 at the half & then Geoff Lowe showed up so we had 4 on the bench.

Their second goal came about 10 minutes into the second half on a corner kick. This big lumberjack type got up in the air & headed it in off the crossbar.

Number 3 came another 10 minutes later.

Keith was steady as usual in the net.

We received 2 yellow cards, yours truly when my orangatang type behaviour set in after their 3rd goal and Geoff Dwyer for lipping off to the ref.

Craig Baker played the 1st half & seemed to do OK. The beer was nice & cold after the game ....so their were some positives that came out of this match. On a negative note the back window of Smokey's truck cap was smashed by an errant Feildians shot halfway through the first half.

So....next match is Monday Night at 8:30 at Wishingwell Field versus Star of the Sea.

Please advise if you can or cannot make this fixture.

Players who played:
Keith Garland
Craig Baker
Jeff Haines

Next match is Monday Night at 8:30 at Wishingwell Field versus Star of the Sea.
