Game 15: Feildians 4 CBS 0

Game 15: Feildians 4 CBS 0
August 29, 2005 at 6:00pm
Nugent Field
Weather Conditions: 14c with light winds

After the recent rains the grass on Nugent Field returned to life, but the real question was, could CBS return to any resemblence of life. Forget about suspense....the answer was NO. CBS once again went with the 3-5-2 formation, but with less success than the last match. Newly
uniformed Bernie Hicks had the first try of the game with less than 5 minutes played, a nice feed from Todd Ryan sent Bernie into the area, but the Feildians keeper made a strong challenge to cover the ball. Bernie lamented that he could have scored, but thought that sending the ball and keeper into the goal would not have been very sporting. Feildians struck first at around 15 minutes on a corner kick when one of their lumberjack type strikers was left unmarked in the 6 yard area & he tapped home a "gimme" behind a startled Keith Rideout. Feildians kept pouring it on as they constantly outmanned CBS in their side of the field & had the three fullbacks constantly scrambling and on their heals. Towards the end of the half CBS started to pick it up, but could not generate any offense. Their was glimmer of hope midway through the half when a ball was put through to Todd Ryan who got his toe on it only to see the shot roll wide by two feet. Brian Gosse also made a quite nifty play where he brought the ball
up from his fullback position & dribbled by a multitude of Feildian defenders, penetrated to the top of the 18, only to be denied by the Feildians keeper. The half time whistle sounded with Feildians holding a 1-Nil lead.

There would be no comeback this night at Nugent Feild. Feildians scored three quick ones early in the second half & CBS were toast. Some more offensive chances were generated later in the half. Sean Paul took over the duties of corner kicks and the ball actually came into play in the penalty area, the CBS lads were flat footed on the ball as they were not accustomed to seeing the ball come over from the corner. Captain Cal had a nice shot from a free kick actually get around the wall only to be stopped by the Feildians keeper who had line up for the shot perfectly.

Keith "Cable Guy" Hynes hit a nice hard volley from out on an angle from 12 yards out only to miss the net by less than a foot. Frankie Dwyer also had a nice chance from within the 18 but missed the net. However the highlight of the night came midway through the second half when Gerard Kenny attempted to crack off one of the lumberjack forwards only to bounce off and tumble to the tuff hitting his forehead off the lucious playing field. When he regained consciousness, he acknowleged the four fingers that Jeff showed him and he retired to the sideline to await the full time whistle. Gerard tried to get the mud over his face, but he wouldn't let Jeff spit on a tissue and rub it the way his mother used to do it.

On a final note last night's game was the final game for Rick Squires. Rick has been called up to the Ottawa Renegades, he explained that football jerseys fit better. Final Score Feildians 4 CBS 0
