RE: Quarter Final Game

Feildian Grounds
Weather Conditions: Sunny, 16c & breezy 39 km/hr
with gusts to 41 km/hr

In a rematch of last year's playoff CBS took to the field in an effort to gain their first victory of the season..... in the first game of the year that really counted. The winner would move on into
the next playoff round.....the loser would go home. Both benches were stocked full of players, the weather was tremendous for October....though it was kinda breezy. The kick-off was delayed by about 20 minutes as we stood on the sidelines and watched Star of the Sea upset Mount Pearl in extra time. Would the soccer gods smile on CBS as well as Star? We would find out the answer to this question over the course of the next 90 minutes

The game started out "even steven" with Feildians making a little more headway into CBS territory. Feildians struck first at around 15 minutes when Matt Edwards corralled an errant ball, which eluded and bounced past Albert, from around 10 yards out & beat keeper Keith
Rideout who had no chance on the volley. For the next 20 minutes the difference between the teams was marginal with Feildians attacking a bit more and CBS defending admirably. Feildians made it 2-0 at the 40 minute mark on a scrambly play off a corner kick. Again the ball took several favourable Fieldian bounces before it found its way to the back of the net off the foot of somebody. CBS got that one back in the dieing seconds of the half when Albert Lush took a throw in at center threw the ball at Todd Ryan's back, the ball deflected back to Albert who beat two unsuspecting Feildian defenders, he then took advantage of some open space & carried the
ball into Feildians territory & struck a hard low drive from around 30 yards out. Keeper Neil Tetstone dropped down & made a nice save but he couldn't corral the rebound. Todd "speedy" Ryan was Johnny on the spot and squib kicked the ball behind Tetstone which got caught up in a wind gust and floated across the line to cut the margin to 2-1. Seconds later referee Damien "finally a good game" Masterson sounded the whistle to end the first half. CBS retreated to the bench with renewed enthusiasm .

The second half started with the same side which finished the first half, Dennis "Goggles" Dober, got an early jump on the kick off and was able to have all his soccer gear in place. Gerard said he
only wanted to play 5 minutes, Jeff replied that if he was only playing 5 minutes not to go out there he may only cause something. This proved to be foreshadowing at its finest.

It took Feildians just 4 minutes, of Gerard's planned 5 minutes, to regain their 2-goal advantage when Gerard "nut kracker" Kenny hauled down Feildians midfielder Jim Royle just outside the
18-yard box. Gerard tried the "nut kracker" which he made famous in St. Lawrence during the provincial tournament, but this time he only fondled the opponent. JR thought he was at the Sleeve and fell to the ground, screaming in disbelief as Gerard tumbled on top of him necessitated the ref to call a foul. He suggested they both get a room as this was a family rated game.

Mugs "Breezeway" Morgan promptly took the free kick for Feildians and placed a beautiful cross over the two man wall onto the head of Matt Edwards who deflected it into the corner of the net making it 3-1 for Feildians. CBS continued to press and fight for yardage, but alas our faith was sealed.

Fieldians players/spectators were permitted a run in the last five minutes, Lou "I'm not offside, it's my gut", Puddister and Nelson "Gout" Stokes took up vital positions on the field. Jeff explained to Nelson that he never played long enough to claim his soccer registration as a business expense this year.

Player of the Game has to go to Albert for his dizzying display of tackles and throw-ins.

Yellow Cards: Albert "I didn't say anything Ref" Lush

Notably moments: Albert asked if he will get a real uniform next season. Craig Baker never left in an ambulance. Gerard askedwho was available for next season.
