CBS Masters Game 4: Mount Pearl 1 CBS 1

2005 CBS Squad @ King George V

July 4, 2005 at 8:30 pm
King George V Field
Weather Conditions: 13c with a light breeze

Game 4 featured a few firsts for the season. Three new players Claude (la chat) Favre in the net, Frank Dwyer up front, who brings his own style of orangatang soccer to the field and in the midfield Dr. Steve Major MD, who may be more valuable off the field as our Chief Medical Officer. The game also resulted in our first point of the season.

The "Torbay Unit" started the match, led by Geoff Lowe, Roger Power, Todd Ryan and Rick Squires. Mount Pearl came out crashing & banging but we defended well. Midway through the half the "CBS Contingent" took over with Frank Dwyer showing his speed & talent up front in extremely brief bursts. Chances were about "even steven" during the first half. Claude showed some fine ball handling skills in the nets and the whistle blew at halftime witha 0-0 deadlock.

The second half was much the same as the first. We defended well and kept Mount Pearl's chances to low percentage outside shots. We penetrated a couple of times but couldn't finish. Mount Pearl struck first at 75 minutes on a quick counter attack that caught us off guard and Bill Bavis notched the marker on a nice finish. Claude had no chance on his volley from eight yards out. We replied within two minutes when Craig Baker got the ball up to the 8 yard line for a throw in. On a throw in from Roger Power, Captain Cal made a nice feed to Keith Hynes who finished it off from well within the 18 yard box. [POST GAME INTERVIEW WITH CAL - CLICK HERE]

We had a great chance to win it only a couple of minutes later when Jeff Haines was sent in all alone only to see his strike roll tantalizingly wide of the net. A few minutes later the whistle went & after our team picture was taken we retreated to the dressing room to savour our first point of the young season. For those historians among us we managed to earn our first point last year on August 25th so we are seven weeks ahead of last season.

Standouts last night included the Baker boys & Brian Gosse & generally the whole back line, Smokey in the midfield, Claude in the net and Shawn Paul upfront, especially for surviving a couple of cracks from John Clarke.
