Game 18 Game Report: CBS vs. Holy Cross

Game 18
September 22, 2005 at 5:45pm
Mundy Pond Field
Weather Conditions: 14c with westerly winds 59 km/h gusting to 80

The game was played under windy conditions & the field which still hadn't dried out from the recent heavy rains, was like a bog. In the first half Holy Cross faced the wind & utilized their ball control style to perfection. They hit a couple of good strikes but could not beat keeper Craig Baker who replace former keeper Gerard 'the sieve" Kenny who was banished to the fullback line and told to keep his hands off the ball. Gerard however would figure into a scoring play. CBS also played their style to perfection. What that style is, I really don't know, but they kept Holy Cross off the score sheet & generated no real scoring chances. Referee German sounded the half time whistle and CBS were very happy to retreat to the bench at half time with the score deadlocked at 0-0.

In the second half with the wind to their back Holy Cross were a bit more dangerous but CBS still defended well......until about 10 minutes in when Gerard Kenny used his speed and endurance to save the ball on the touch line, this turn of events allowed Gerard time to turn the ball over to Fox Reddy, about 35 yards out. Reddy came in on a 3 on 2, slipped the ball through defender Tony Baker's legs and at the same time the last CBS defender back Denis Dober step on a gofer who was swimming past, fell to the boggy turf leaving two strikers unmarked & bang it was 1-0 for Holy Cross. CBS quickly regrouped and about 2 minutes later advanced the ball into Holy Cross territory. The ball ended up on Clyde Thornhill's foot just outside the 18 yard box. Clyde threaded a beautiful pass right to Claude "Le Chat" Favre & before he could shout out "YES....YES" the ball was in the net & the score was knotted at 1 goal apiece. Jubilation reigned supreme and the shouts of joy could be heard as far away as the Esso station in Manuels where the cars were backed up to the bridge. When everyone on the field regained consciousness, the game resumed and Holy Cross did not want to settle for a tie. They kept pressing, CBS kept
defending and about 5 minutes later Darryl Winsor penetrated from the outside, got in close & scored a very nice marker that put Cross up 2-1. CBS did not quit & pressed the play for the final 5 minutes but could not equalize. The whistle sounded, both teams shook hands and Holy Cross went home with the 2-1 win & CBS retreated for a cold Molson product and a lively post game discussion of the well played match.
