Game 19 Game Report: CBS vs. Holy Cross

Game 19
The Night of the Yellow Cards

September 29, 2005 at 8:30pm
Wishingwell Field Weather Conditions: 7c with a light breeze

What would back to back games with Holy Cross bring? Could CBS improve on their performance from the previous game? The answers to these mind boggling questions lie within.

The game was played under excellent conditions, however the field left an awful lot to desire.....just like the refereeing. Once again Holy Cross started out utilizing their ball control style of play. CBS defended well and even generated some chances. A well thought out starting
line-up put Clyde "Too Tall" Thornhill in the defender's position, although that resulted in the team being a man short as we only started three in the midfield. Clyde played a great game and was near a complete game until a coaching strategy late in the match put him on the bench for an extra striker. Clyde lamented on the turn of events, but alass...... he was depending on Gerard "Big Toe" Kenny for a ride home. Gerard "Big Toe" stalked the back left outside and completed controlled Scrappy Mullett, Scrappy was forced to take several undisciplined challenges which resulted in free kicks for CBS. "Big Toe" taunted Scrappy at every turn. Things
were even till around the 30 minute mark when Scrappy removed Big Toe out of his jock (or was it his false teeth) and directed a nice cross into the net that first time keeper Albert Lush had no chance on. Gerard quickly took his big toe and left the playing surface quoting fatigue. Holy Cross went up by two when Paul Windsor re-directed another cross behind Lush, who once again had no chance to stop that one.

The half ended 2-0 in favour of Cross.

The second half was much the same with Cross playing ball control, CBS defending & also putting together a few counter attacks. Cross made it 3-0 when striker Todd "I forget his last name" beat Albert on a breakaway. After that the game turned into a joke with the referee
handing out yellow cards to CBS players for any reason he could dream up. Holy Cross players shouted and cursed the night away & the only players carded were the CBS players who Cross players pointed to. When will CBS learn not to speak too loudly to each other, the ref's keen ears are always alert to the whispers, his eyesight on the other hand makes Mr. Magoo seem like an eagle. The whistle sounded ending the fiasco with Cross going away with a 3-0 victory.

Ths game ended the regular season for CBS..... a season where this reporter must add that the CBS team stuck to their pre season plan of waiting till October & the playoffs before registering their first win. It has been noted that many professional teams could not stick that such a game plan with such discipline. Even the 1972 Soviet Hockey team could not have thought up such a plan to dupe Team Canada 72.

Congratulations to all involved in this remarkable achievement....now it's onto the playoffs where victory awaits.

Player of the match Clyde "Too Tall" Thornhill who played 89 mins and 20 seconds of flawless defending. Honourable note Gerard "Big Toe" Kenny whose ankles bruised up Scrappy's feet.

Yellow card recipients were: Roger Power, Robert Taylor, Brian Gosse & Tony Baker

Players who played: Gerard Kenny, Clyde Thornhill, Todd Ryan, Brian Gosse, Jeff Haines, Albert Lush, Dale Temple, Steve O'Driscoll, Claude Favre, Robert Taylor, Roger Power, Steve "Doc" Major, Craig Baker, Tony Baker & Ken Porter.
