Game 14: Star 2 CBS 0

August 22, 2005 at 6:30pm

Mundy Pond Field
Weather Conditions: 19c with WSW winds 24 gusting to 37

Have the Soccer Gods turned their back on the CBS masters?? The scoring draught continued into game 14. Captain Cal brought the troops together for a pre-game pep talk/strategy session. This game saw the return of Johnny "Rugby" Saunders and Keith "The Cable Guy" Hynes and we started the game with 4 reserves on the bench. Things were looking good. CBS took the wind in the first half & full of piss & vinegar..... & five midfielders, completely controlled the 1st half from whistle to whistle. Their hard work led to a couple of nice changes but once again the finishing touch was not there. Brian Gosse had the best chance on a shot from about 12 yards out. It came off a nice corner kick by Jeff Haines. Jeff got his corner into the 6 yard box & the ball came out nicely to Brian who shot through a maze of short guys only to miss the mark by a couple of feet. We continued throughout the half with nice ball movement but the half time
whistle sounded with the scoreboard reading NIL-NIL.

Right from the second half kick off, Star brought the ball up through the middle & sprung Tony Wells into an open space & his hard volley from 16 yards beat keeper Keith Rideout, who had no chance to keep that one out. Star with the wind to their backs kept the pressure on, but could not add to their lead. The chances for CBS were few & far between the rest of the way, although Shawn Paul happened to make it near the 6 yard box only to feel the "wrath" of the Star keeper. The game turned chippy towards the end with Tony Price kicking Gerard "Glad my jock didn't fall off" Kenny in the "groinial area". Price received a yellow card for his effort while
Gerard got at least 3 days of celibacy. Brian Gosse tried to even things up a few minutes later when he unceremoniously dumped Price, but the referee pointed to the spot & Star made it 2-NIL when they converted on the resulting penalty kick. Ten seconds later the final whistle blew & we retreated to the sidelines for some cold Molson & some post match analysis. One other incident of note was when Neff Dwyer was sent off by the ref with about 10 minutes remaining for adamantly advising the ref that he thought that his parents were never married and that he may be some kind of "illegitimate focker". Neff gets to sit out the next match as an additional reward for those insightful comments. Thanks once again to Molson Breweries for the cold ones and to Keith Rideout for tending the net.
